The environment interacts naturally with the phenomena that changes or break its cycle and the human activity is the main factor that interfere the most to change its cycle causing negative impacts.

The PMFS used to run the land exploration on a large scale demonstrates its technical and eco-friendly viability to guarantee the minimal social impacts as well as physical and biological ones (soil and water, flora and fauna) through constant monitoring of these impacts, which the main goal is to verify the efficiency of the decisions taken and ensuring that the environmental quality standards are not exceeded, thus detecting these impacts in time to prevent or fix them, this way ensuring the maintenance of the forest renewable resources.


The maintenance of the biological diversity is one of the main goals of the forest exploration plan which ensures the existence of the remaining trees and allows the selection of species suitable for trading.

With the intervention caused by the lumber production which reduces the area where the commercial spices are located, it is necessary to monitor the activity to ensure the main tree species are kept spread in the area managed so no rows of trees of the same species are harvested all at once, thus permitting the soil to regenerate and receive the seeds that will be sown in an area to be managed in the future.

During the harvesting process, the fall fallen tree should not aim directly on the path where other remaining species are located (and protected by law) as well as the commercially viable ones. The natural beauty seen in the lush green forest may be changed at a first glance, however, it is expected that in a short period of time it will regrow through the natural process or aided by a scientific method of soil and seed treatment.


The conservation of the soil and its physical, chemical and biological features rely on the appropriated monitoring and management of the land. Using the proper road planning and management, it is possible to minimize the negative impacts on the soil, such as: the loss of organic substance, dissolution of nutrients, hardening or lack of proper soil drainage and the faulty regeneration of the soil. Besides having an appropriate planning of each process for the soil conservation, it is necessary to maintain a constant monitoring of the activities, especially in the period preceding each operation to ensure the constant maintenance of service roads, highways, log dragging trails and heavy machinery in order to avoiding erosion and the negative impacts mentioned above.

When cutting a tree, it is important to keep the same dragging path the closest possible to the nearest exit to the storage yard in a process that helps to minimize the soil impacts. It is recommended to avoid using heavy machinery during the raining season to avoid the hardening of the soil. During the dragging process, it is vital to use chains and cranes hooked to the tractor.


Regarding the water resources and its impacts, it is vital to monitor the condition of the river bank vegetation as well as creeks, springs, grottos, etc, to ensure they are permanently preserved.

It is strictly forbidden to harvest trees near any source of water. Another major concern regarding the quality of the water is the construction of roads which cannot be built too steep neither too deep as it might damage the water sources around it. If necessary, pipe wells are built to improve the water drainage without obstructing the natural course of the water sources.


The exploration activity in the selected area will be performed in a way that it can create “shelters” for the native wildlife while the lumber harvesting process is taking place, that is, the exploration activity will begin near the area that was previously harvested enabling the wildlife to “escape” to untouched areas or to areas where the exploration activity is temporarily suspended.

Thus, regarding the negative impacts on wildlife, it is expected that with the proper exploration methods, the maintenance of the entire ecosystem and the reduction of human interference, there will be no significant risks neither damage to the wildlife at the UMF (Area of Land Exploration - ALE).
